Why You Should Visit Costa Rica During the Rainy Season
When most people think about visiting Costa Rica, they automatically assume the dry season is the best time to go. But here's a little secret...
The rainy season—often called the green season—is actually one of my favourite times to be here. Yes, you'll see a little rain, but it's also when Costa Rica feels its most vibrant, peaceful, and alive. In fact, it's the time of year I often recommend to guests who are looking for a more authentic experience.
Here are seven reasons why I love visiting Costa Rica during the rainy season—and why you might, too.
1) You'll Experience Costa Rica Without the Crowds
One of the biggest perks of travelling during the green season is having more of Costa Rica to yourself.
Beaches feel quieter, restaurants are easier to get into, and popular attractions are far less crowded. Instead of feeling like you're competing for the perfect sunset view or rushing through busy tourist spots, you can slow down and truly enjoy the experience.
If you're someone who loves peaceful mornings and a more relaxed atmosphere, this is one of the best times to visit.
2) You Can Get More Value From Your Vacation
Travelling during the rainy season can also mean better value.
Flights are often more affordable, accommodations may offer seasonal rates, and you can often enjoy the same incredible experiences without paying peak-season prices.
It makes Costa Rica even more accessible, especially if you're looking to enjoy a longer stay or make the most of your travel budget.
3) Costa Rica Is at Its Most Beautiful
If you've ever wondered why it's called the green season, this is why.
The rain brings everything to life. The forests become lush, the mountains are covered in vibrant greenery, and flowers bloom everywhere you look. It's one of the most photogenic times of year, and personally, I think it's when Costa Rica looks its absolute best.
4) The Wildlife Is Incredible
One of the things I love most about Costa Rica is that wildlife is part of everyday life—but during the rainy season, it feels even more active.
It's common to spot monkeys swinging through the trees, colourful macaws flying overhead, hummingbirds darting between tropical flowers, butterflies everywhere you look, and so many other incredible animals enjoying the lush landscape.
If seeing Costa Rica's wildlife is on your bucket list, the green season won't disappoint.
5) It Doesn't Rain All Day
This is probably the biggest misconception I hear. Many people imagine days of nonstop rain, but that's rarely the case.
Most mornings are sunny and beautiful, making them perfect for excursions, beach days, or exploring. Afternoon showers often roll through for a short time before clearing up again, leaving behind cooler temperatures and some of the most beautiful sunsets you'll ever see. Once you experience it, you'll realize the rain becomes part of the charm—not something that gets in the way of your vacation.
6) Waterfalls Are at Their Best
If waterfalls are on your Costa Rica bucket list, the rainy season is when they're truly unforgettable.
The extra rainfall means stronger flows, fuller rivers, and even more dramatic scenery. Whether you're hiking to a hidden waterfall or stopping to admire one along the road, the landscapes feel even more alive this time of year.
And if you're a photographer—or just love a good vacation photo—you'll appreciate just how spectacular everything looks.
7) It's My Favourite Time to Visit
As much as I love Costa Rica year-round, there's something about the green season that keeps bringing me back.
The slower pace, the vibrant landscapes, the incredible wildlife, and the afternoon rain that leaves everything feeling fresh—it all creates an atmosphere that's hard to describe until you've experienced it yourself.
If you're thinking about visiting Costa Rica, don't let the words rainy season scare you away. It might just become your favourite time to experience this incredible country, too.
Whether you're dreaming of relaxing by the pool, exploring waterfalls, spotting wildlife, or simply embracing the Pura Vida lifestyle, the rainy season offers a side of Costa Rica that many travellers never get to experience.
